18.02.2009 - RMK and a student company to cooperate in decreasing the ecological footprint 18.02

RMK and the student company Roheline Jälg signed a cooperation agreement to provide people with the opportunity to decrease their ecological footprint.

On the student company’s website www.rohelinejalg.ee, everyone can calculate how much carbon dioxide they create annually with their lifestyle and consumption, and how many trees should be planted to neutralise this amount of carbon dioxide. On the same website, a desired amount of transplants can be ordered, which will be grown as new forest on the land of RMK. The planting of one tree by the student company costs EEK 20.

“We wish to increase the environmental awareness of people, create new forest and thereby form a cleaner living environment for everybody,” said Margus Potisepp, the representative of the student company. These young people have also set the goal of introducing green thinking to Estonians, as well as the potential effects of thoughtless actions on nature.

Roheline Jälg informs RMK of the amounts ordered by customers and ensures the planting of the transplants ordered. RMK will select the plots suitable for the establishment of new forest from the state lands under its administration and submit a forest notification to the Environment Department with regard to the planting of forest. If necessary, RMK will also ensure preparation of the land prior to planting and deliver the plants at the time and in the quantity suitable for planting. In addition, RMK will also be responsible for the further servicing and management of the forest plants.

The student company of Tallinn School No 21, which started business on 1 September 2008, is a youth project of the Junior Achievement Development Fund. The development fund has been joining young people interested in the Estonia economy for nearly 15 years.

RMK is a profit-making state agency established under the Forestry Act, aimed at the sustainable and efficient management of the state forest. In addition to this, RMK creates possibilities for forest holidays and shapes nature awareness. RMK manages 38% of Estonia’s forests.
