06.05.2008 - The State Forest Management Centre will open a restored cone dryer 10.10
“The renovation of the Roela cone dryer is a good example of the direction of RMK in the recent years towards organising and introducing our forest heritage,” Marge Rammo, Head of the Recreation Management Department of RMK, said. “The cone dryer is not exactly located on the recreational area of RMK, so local initiative and cooperation is very important for opening up and introducing new opportunities to people.”
According to Aili Taal, Member of Board of MTÜ Roela Kodukant, the association wishes to contribute to promoting joint activities in the villages around Roela, and exhibit and preserve the local cultural heritage. “A few years ago, we turned to RMK with the idea to restore the cone dryer. We proposed that MTÜ Roela Kodukant would introduce it to interested people and keep it active as a museum.”
“The rural municipality is very glad to do something jointly as the cone dryer renovated and fixed up by RMK is one of the most interesting sights of our region," Toomas Väinaste, rural municipality mayor of Vinni, added of our reioof restoring the cone dryer. “A study trail has already been established on Roela esker, and the adding of the cone dryer as an object of forest heritage culture will diversify the opportunities for nature education in our rural municipality.”
The Roela cone dryer was built in 1927. After the Land Reform of 1920, there were 4 state-owned cone dryers in Estonia. This, however, was not enough to cover the need for seeds in the state forests. In 1925, Estonia faced pine seed failure, seeds had to be bought from Finland. As a result, the General Government of State Forests started establishing a network of cone dryers.
RMK, the manager of the state forest, is a profit-making state agency established under the Forestry Act, aimed at sustainable and efficient management of the state forest: forest renewal, growing and use, and organisation of forest protection. RMK organises game upkeep in the state forest, and ensures forest use related to every man’s right. RMK manages 40% of the Estonian forests.
