RMK has been awarded an international sustainable forestry certificate for the next five years 09.02

RMK has been managing the state forest in accordance with the FSC certificate for the past ten years already. “This is a quality label of sustainable forest management that takes into account all the social and environmental aspects,” explained Aigar Kallas, Chairman of the Management Board at RMK, adding that wood obtained from a certified forest and products manufactured from it are more competitive in European markets that put a premium on sustainable management.

According to Aigar Kallas, buyers today value increasingly suppliers who manage their forests sustainably. “The entire world is steadily moving toward a sustainable lifestyle that reduces the carbon footprint, and the origin of both wood and products manufactured from it – be it regular paper or a wooden house – interests people more than previously,” Kallas clarified.

The non-profit association Forest Stewardship Council, which engages in international certification, has developed principles and criteria of sustainable forest management based on which it is possible to appraise the operations of a forest owner in economic, social and environmental terms. The FSC logo designates products that contain wood from a well-managed forest. RMK has held an FSC certificate since 1 February 2002. As a result of the recertification conducted in 2011, RMK’s FSC certificate has been renewed through 31 January 2017.

RMK’s management system has been recognised to be in compliance with the ISO standards of environmental and quality management. In addition, RMK has been awarded the PEFC, another international forest certificate that testifies to sustainable management.
