“Compared to the first quarter of last year, the average sale price of timber has decreased by more than two and a half times,” said Jaanus Laas, Financial Director of RMK. “We forecast an end to price decreases in the second quarter, but the demand for timber will continue to remain very low,” Jaanus Laas added.
In the first quarter of 2009, RMK sold 621 000 m3 of timber for MEEK 317.4, with the average price being EEK 511 per cubic metre. In the first quarter, RMK mainly sold cutting rights to growing forest in the form of sanitary cutting –16 300 m3, at an average price of EEK 124 per m3.
RMK spent a total of MEEK 8.9 in the first quarter to provide nature use options based on every man’s right and to promote the nature awareness of the population. From hunting (selling of hunting packages, products of hunting and hunting permits), RMK earned MEEK 3.2 in the first quarter.
RMK is a profit-making state agency established under the Forestry Act, aimed at sustainable and efficient management of the state forest. In addition to this, RMK creates possibilities for forest holidays and shapes nature awareness. RMK manages 38% of Estonia’s forests.
