RMK to restore heritage conservation object damaged during felling works 28.10
Agu Palo, forest manager for the RMK Võru County Forest District, and Martti Veldi, regional senior inspector for heritage conservation, agreed that in addition to the restoration of the damaged barrow edges, RMK will establish a barrier on the intersection of the forest roads to prevent driving on the area of the barrows.
In addition, RMK shall fund the additional marking of the heritage conservation area and plans to add the layer map of heritage conservation restrictions to the electronic map layers of the state forest. With this, the fellers will be guaranteed better information about the protection areas of heritage conservation objects.
RMK felled trees in the state forest in Võru County, Vastseliina Rural Municipality, near Loosi Village, from 15 August to 20 September 2009.
“An incorrect technological plan was chosen for the works, according to which the timber collected from the cutting areas located in the area of 500-600 metres was stored at the intersection of two forest roads in the protection area of heritage conservation objects, Loosi cairn and barrow complexes. The intersection of the roads was straightened, to a degree, to allow for the transport the timber. During the works, the edges of three barrows were damaged,” explained Tiit Timberg, member of the management board of RMK.
”RMK regrets what happened and will implement measures to avoid such mistakes in the future," Timberg stated.
